The NC State University Soil Judging team placed 4th out of 10 participating schools at the regional contest hosted by UT-Knoxville October 4-7, 2021. Curtis Murphy placed 6th overall (out of 55 participants) in the contest and the team has qualified for the national contest in spring 2022 hosted by Ohio State University.
This is the first in person soil judging contest in nearly 2 years and the first time NCSU has qualified for nationals in back-to-back-to-back years since 2003-2005.
The students saw many different soils around Knoxville, TN that represent the ridge and valley physiographic province. Soils included floodplain-terraces of small and large streams, upland residual soils, colluvial soils, fragic properties, and drainways.
Congratulations to the team, and onward to Ohio in the spring!
